English proficiency plays an important role in the workplace amid increasing globalization and labor market competition. In Indonesia, English is no longer viewed as a supplementary skill but has become one of the key competencies in the employee recruitment process. This study aims to examine the urgency of English proficiency in job recruitment in Indonesia through a literature review approach. The research employs a qualitative method by analyzing national and international journal articles as well as relevant online news sources published between 2022 and 2025. The findings indicate that English proficiency is frequently used as an initial screening requirement in employee recruitment, particularly in the service, hospitality, education, and globally oriented corporate sectors. Moreover, English proficiency shows a positive relationship with work readiness, self-confidence, career aspirations, and employment opportunities for higher education graduates. However, this review also reveals a gap between English language instruction in educational institutions and the actual demands of the workplace. Therefore, strengthening contextual and industry-oriented English learning is necessary to enhance workforce competitiveness.
